Samar, founder of auli, walking down a hiking trail with the ocean in the distance.

We started auli because most air purifiers ask you to compromise.

The good-looking ones don't clean very well. The well-engineered ones don't belong in your living room. We didn't think those were the only two options — and so we set out to make a third one.

I started auli after moving from a small mountain town in New Hampshire to a city. In the mountains, the air felt different — crisp, easy to breathe, the kind of thing you don't notice until you've lost it. Two years later in the city, I noticed it every day.

We spend roughly 90% of our lives indoors, where the air can be two to five times more polluted than outside. Most people don't think about it. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

So I went looking for an air purifier — and what I found surprised me. Every option felt like a tradeoff. Either an appliance that worked but didn't belong in the room, or a piece of design that looked good but couldn't really clean the air. Nothing in between.

That's where auli started. Not as a product idea, but as a question: what if you didn't have to choose? What if the air purifier was a piece of furniture you'd want anyway — a floor lamp, as it turned out — that happened to clean the air to medical-grade standards?

auli is, in some ways, a tribute to those places where the air still feels like a gift — the Appalachians, the Rockies, the Himalayas, the Sierra Nevada. We can't bring you the mountains. But we can bring some of what they feel like into the room you actually live in.

That question — what if you didn't have to choose? — is now the rule we use to make every decision.

We chose a cylindrical form instead of a box — because boxes look like appliances. We chose Soft Ivory and Warm Linen instead of stark plastic — because your home deserves something that meets its warmth, not something that fights it. We built a separate amber nightlight into the base of auli — warm enough not to hurt your eyes at 3 a.m., soft enough for a nursery — because the lamp you reach for in the middle of the night is not the lamp you read by. We chose medical-grade H13 HEPA, third-party tested at 99.97% — because we weren't willing to soften the performance to fit the design, or soften the design to fit the performance.

Every choice has to earn its place: it has to make the air cleaner or make auli something you'd want in your home — without ever sacrificing one for the other. Most do both. The ones that do neither, we don't ship.

Today, auli is one product: auli 2.0 — a floor lamp and a true HEPA air purifier, in one piece of furniture you'd want either way. Available in Soft Ivory and Warm Linen. Read the full product details →

auli is a long-term project. The 2.0 is the first object — there will be more. Each one will follow the same rule: clean air, considered design, no compromise on either.
